Dr. Andrew Weil and Manuka honey
Filed Under Manuka health benefits |
I was pleasantly surprised to pick up today’s daily newspaper and see a column by Dr. Andrew Weil about the healing properties of Manuka honey. In his “Ask Dr. Weil” column, he was asked to recommend a natural remedy to help healing and minimize scarring for a boy who had first, second and third-degree burns from a kitchen accident.
Dr. Weil wrote about medicinal honey, saying that honey has been used for centuries “as a dressing for wounds and burns.” He referred to an article in a 2006 issue of International Journal of Lower Extremity Wounds that cited 22 clinical studies of more than 2,000 patients. Because of these studies it was concluded that honey speeds the healing process and minimizes scarring. A study conducted in India showed that burns treated with honey healed faster and with less scarring. Dr. Weil said that he did not mean the kind of honey you can buy in supermarkets, but “one of the new medicinal honeys that are now available. He specifically referred to Manuka honey, the variety studied at the University of Waikato in New Zealand.
Dr. Weil is a well-respected physician whose articles about alternative medicine have been published in New Age Journal.
It is gratifying to see such a prominent medical expert endorsing Manuka honey for helping the healing process.
